Cuddly possum by Catigma Cuddly possum by Catigma
Yay! I've seen a couple of other deviants who make these amazing dolls in a combination of clay and plush. I've wanted to try combining the two crafts myself for quite a while, as these are the two crafts i like the most to do  So.. Today i did :D

I made a possum doll, because i think they are really, really cute! We don't have possums in Norway, so i have to be happy with just looking at pictures, and making my own version :)

He is about 15-20 cm long (the double if we count in the tail). Head and feet made of clay attached to a steelwire skeleton, and painted with acrylic and matt laquer (nose and mouth has glossy laquer). The tail and fur is sewn on, and all parts that is not clay is fully poseable.

He is actually very cuddly, as the fur is made out of a furry blanket :aww:

Sorry for the super late response to this, but you really did an amazing job on it c': if you don't mind me asking, what sort of steel wire did you use? I thought I might give making a posable thingy a try sometime but there are so many different types it seems, like 'memory wire' and stuff haha

I have never seen one of these in real life. But I went and looked them up. And they are lovely. I love the way you made the face. I never considered using another material for detailed areas such as this. Its really cool. :D

that steelwire skeleton must be quite strong. not sure how you modeled the head, but I imagine it being comparatively heavy...
never tried combining plushing and sculpting. does it take long to make the clay parts?

This was my first doll, so I have learned from my mistakes. The steelwire skeleton is not strong enough, and i realize i should've filled it with rice, instead of just regular filling. It does however sit, stand and do what i like it to, as long as it has some support for the head. The head is, as you've guessed pretty heavy. The combination is fun though, I'm definately doing more of it :) yes, the clay parts is what takes time. Felt they took forever to make because i wanted to have it look as realistic as i could get it. Not quite pleased with its feet, but all in all I'm really pleased with how it came out :)
